The New Ancient of Days [or] The Man of the Cave of Engihoul
Herman Melville (1819-1891)
The man of bone confirms his throne
In cave where fossils be
Outdating every mummy known,
Not older Cuvier's mastadon,
Nor older much the sea;
Old as the Glacial Period, he;
and claims he calls to mind the day
When Thule's king, by reindeer drawn,
His sleigh-bells jingling in icy morn,
Slid clean from the Pole to Wetterhorn
Over frozen waters in May!

there he is! poet lariat
Wikipedia: Noah (orant) |
As Parliamentary Poet, Fred Wah had one assignment: Diamond Jubilee. Souds easy nufh, and they're hiring! Queen's a queen for sixty, ain't that nifty. [£900,000]
Nomination deadline: Position of Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate, 2014-2016. Deadline to submit nominations: Wednesday 3 July 2013.
Wah says he would like more work. According to the National Post, he has a "list of what would have been more worthy topics for Canada’s national poet to tackle, apparently taking aim at the Conservative government’s immigration reforms, its legislative agenda on aboriginal issues, its strong backing for Israel on questions of peace and security in the Middle East, and its openness to the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline."
According to Wah: “I wish that my government had asked me to write poetry about immigration policy, about Idle No More, about Canada’s complicity in the Middle East, the Enbridge pipeline... I haven’t been asked to do any of those things.” ("A Poet Without Poems," National Post)
The position of poet lariat was vacant from April to Dec 2011. Wah is a former teacher at Selkirk College, David Thompson University Centre and the University of Calgary.

spiny or smooth
One thing that got me riled up was this poem and it's not gracious to pick on poets. It's not an easy job. First, it doesn't pay: crime pays. (Nevertheless.) what kind of sh*t poem is this!?
Each day we go about our business, walking past each other, catching each others’ eyes or not, about to speak or speaking. All about us is noise. All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues. Someone is stitching up a hem, darning a hole in a uniform, patching a tire, repairing the things in need of repair.
Someone is trying to make music somewhere with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.
A woman and her son wait for the bus.
ALEXANDER: A farmer consider the changing sky; A teacher says, “Take out your pencils. Begin.”
We encounter each other in words, Words spiny or smooth, whispered or declaimed; Words to consider, reconsider.
We cross dirt roads and highways that mark the will of someone and then others who said, “I need to see what’s on the other side; I know there’s something better down the road.”
We need to find a place where we are safe; We walk into that which we cannot yet see.
Say it plain, that many have died for this day. Sing the names of the dead who brought us here, who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges, picked the cotton and the lettuce, built brick by brick the glittering edifices they would then keep clean and work inside of.
Praise song for struggle; praise song for the day. Praise song for every hand-lettered sign;
The figuring it out at kitchen tables.
Some live by “Love thy neighbor as thy self.”
Others by first do no harm, or take no more than you need.
What if the mightiest word is love, love beyond marital, filial, national. Love that casts a widening pool of light. Love with no need to preempt grievance.
In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun.
On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp -- praise song for walking forward in that light.I don't like it. (Too many word thingies.) And, speaking of poet laureates, where's Fred Wah. I mean, "Praise Song For The Day' is nice, but is it hoopla inauguration material. Light, schmight. Each day, wait 4bus, blah blah yada, ding dong. It's depressing.

lisa raitt: strikes are sexy
Never mind about the AECL Candu binder; it wasn't the same as Maxime Bernier (Beauce) and the tits cleavage biker chick NATO files. Never mind about the sexy isotope shortage for cancer patients. Never mind about no one signing off on the CEO, Toronto Port Authority expenses or a $9000 lunch. And just never mind about proroguing (and even more proroguing, forty days and forty nights). btw, are MPs 'essential services'?
Geez. Electro-Motive plant in London (now closed) and its Caterpillar parent strike in Joliet, Illinois. Canada Post. Air Canada flight attendants. Pilots. Mechanics ("flying coffins" & Aveos outsourcing), baggage handlers, cargo agents. Canadian Pacific Railway and Pershing Square's 14.2% equity stake.
Welp. Saskatchewan essential services legislation deemed unconstitutional (07 Feb. 2012).
Recalibration: On January 19, 2010, Raitt moved from the Ministry of Natural Resources to the Labour Ministry.
The house was beginning to shake,
And good press it just did not make.
So Steve shut it down, Caused the country to frown. But then he was
saved by a quake.
Nuclear workers: 900 scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians said 94+ per cent of members sanctioned the strike action on Thursday, May 3rd 2012: a stinging indictment of SNC-Lavalin's cavalier management style and brinkmanship bargaining. A union spokeswoman said Candu is looking to gut most parts of the collective agreement.
Ongoing: RCMP officers want to end a ban, in place since 1918, on Mounties forming a union or police association and having the right to collectively bargain. (Toronto Star, Nov 20, 2012.) "Toxic workplace": Mounted Police Professional Association of Canada (MPPAC), a merger of BC and ON associations, is expecting a ruling from the Ontario Court of Appeal in spring 2012.
Lay-offs: Canadian Space Agency. 100 staff and more to come? Speaking of SNC-Lavalin Defence Programs Inc. (AECL) and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Inc., there's now a signed contract "to extend operational services for up to eight years for the Canadian Department of National Defence’s twelve Kingston-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels...Although their primary mission is coastal surveillance, the vessels perform a wide variety of operational tasks including search and rescue, fisheries and environmental monitoring, disaster relief, mine countermeasures and scientific research."
Does this make sense? The entire program of lay-offs in the public service is expected to cost Canadian taxpayers more than $2 billion.
Weird: Health care workers in Alberta have not had the legal right to strike since 1983.

open letter to rob anders, mp
hiya! I support the CBC. I think it is a National Treasure! Oh, except for its nauseating, endless coverage of the royals last summer. Oh, and its nauseating, endless coverage of another invasion (Libya), yeah yeah Qaddafi had too much, knew too much. Still.
I see 185 people responded to your poll. The CBC was funded over $1 billion by the Government of Canada last year alone. Should the CBC remain publicly funded? And 79% (143 people) said it should be de-funded. Alberta Outdoorsmen don't like it either. The LP, CD archives are being sold, so it must be in the air.
Too bad, your vote on Nelson Mandela, 2001. Oh well, what can ya do. You should set up a White History Month, since it matters so much, in Julys. It would (sorta) coincide with London 2012, Dominion Day War1812Stuff 2012, Stampede 2012. Talk it over with the elks, orange order, shriners, we're-#1christian guys and gals, the legion. It may help tone down the white priders, with the boots, like the folks who set the Filipino man on fire.
I noticed Donna Kennedy-Glans, y'know when the 23 of 30 member executive resigned a while ago, she just won the PC nomination in Calgary-Varsity. Okay, are you a pastor? I saw a video online: you at a Remembrance Day ceremony. I don't think John McCrae ever mentioned the Jesus thing and red poppies signifying the promise of resurrection, but yours is an interesting interpretation.
I think the poem is just about ordinary dead guys and poppies that blow, on fields of crosses.
